Worldbuilding in Science Fiction

Buy Mako's Bounty HERE

by Diane Dooley
One of the most enjoyable things about writing science fiction is the opportunity to create brand new worlds out of figments of your imagination. When my kids were younger one of my favorite things to do was take their enormous box of lego and build a world for them to play in.  Some of their favorites were: Jurassic safari park (just add dinosaurs), high rise city (just add King Kong) and alien worlds (just add broken toys for aliens.) I kinda miss those days, so now my extraneous imagination is focused on building worlds in words.

In Mako’s Bounty, my 1Night Stand novella from Decadent Publishing, I create two different worlds. One is the tough and gritty world of mining colonies in the asteroid belt, from which my two protagonists hail. This world was inspired by the mining and steel town where I grew up in Scotland. At one point I lived in a flat where the view from my bedroom window was a futuristic-looking steel works: blast furnaces, massive buildings, cooling towers and a strange purple-orange glow to the sky. It didn’t take too much of a twist to imagine it as a far future industrial space colony, one in which industrial production is the only view anyone sees, even if they don’t have such a thing as a bedroom window.

The other world I create is Earth - as experienced by someone who was born and brought up in a mining colony on a large asteroid. Earth, as experienced by Mako, is based on a trip I once took to the Caribbean. Even for me, an Earth-dweller, the sights, sounds and smells of the Caribbean was an alien experience. How much more so would it be for a person more used to cold rock, darkness and low-gravity? How could water be that impossible shade of blue? Those torrential downpours every afternoon that left the air wet, heavy and succulent. The incredible ferocity and tenacity of the biting insects. These experiences were hard for me to absorb; for Mako, they threaten to completely overwhelm her underdeveloped senses.

Mako Dolan is a bounty hunter, who has been unsuccessfully chasing the space pirate, Vin Sainte, for months. She has finally lured him into a trap - a honey trap. In this excerpt Vin reminds Mako where they both come from, while gently introducing her to the pleasures of the senses:

“Do you remember? In the colony school? When the adults set a new production record or discovered a rich vein to mine, do you remember how the kids would get a treat?”
“Oh, yes! We got a Chocoflava Bar. I used to break mine up into tiny pieces and try to make it last as long as possible.”
He half smiled. “I did, too. Open up, Makiko. This is the real thing. Chocolate.” She took a small, brown square between her teeth. “Don’t bite down. Let it melt slowly.”
Flavor drenched her mouth in thick, rich bursts of creamy deliciousness. “Mm, so good.” She swallowed and licked her lips, wanting more. “I’ll never eat a Chocoflava Bar again.” Soft fabric wiped her chin.
“That’s enough for now.” He pulled her to standing, then sat back in his chair, tugging her onto his lap. “You’re lucky, you know.” He kissed her. “It’s a thing for Earthers, to try and catch a spacer on their first visit. They like to introduce us to the pleasures of the senses. Some of them go too far. Spacers have gone into comas, even died, from the overload. One lost his mind, I heard, getting fucked by a beautiful woman near one of the pyramids in Egypt after drinking a bottle of the world’s most expensive wine. It was too much for him.”
Not the worst way to go. Better than an asteroid collision. Better than getting stabbed trying to take down a bounty. She rested her head on his shoulder, listening to his soft voice, wishing there was more time to talk with him and hear his stories.
“Earthers dine out on their tales of what they do to us. I’ll be much gentler with you, sweet Makiko. I won’t give you more than you can handle.”

World building starts with an experience, whether it be a memory, an image or a first taste. What was the view from your bedroom window? Have your senses ever been overwhelmed by an experience? These things are important. For from such things, entire worlds can be born.

“Make ‘Em Laugh! Don’t You Know Everyone Wants to Laugh?”

By Diane Dooley

There is a scene in ‘Singing in the Rain,’ one of my all-time favorite movies, called ‘Make ‘Em Laugh.’ Do you remember it? It features the very talented Donald O’Connor doing a slapstick song and dance routine about the importance of making the audience laugh.  Although I can appreciate the charm and energy of O’Connor’s performance, the scene doesn’t, I’m afraid make me laugh. This, despite the fact that I know many others find it hilarious. So why don’t I find it funny?

Humor is so very subjective and, if you’re the kind of writer, as I am, who delights in making people laugh, you always have to take this into account and just accept that no matter how hard you try to make ‘em laugh, some people will just not be amused at all. I’ve learned this through experience.

My first published piece was a rewriting of a popular fairytale that I imbued with lashings of violence and dark humor. For every person who found it amusing there would be another who found it too disturbing to be funny. The first novella I had published was intended to be an over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek homage to the old skool pulp novel. For every person who said they grinned like idiots, there were far more who didn’t find it the slightest bit funny.

“Make ‘em laugh,” says Donald O’Connor, but surely he knew how horrendously bloody difficult that can be! People have different kinds of funny bones and even one’s mood at any given time can change one’s perspective. My husband took me to see ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’ when it first came out. I had giggled throughout the reading of the book, so I thought it would be a sure thing that I’d find the movie equally enjoyable. Nope. I was pregnant with my first child and several days past my due date. Nothing, nothing, NOTHING could have raised a giggle during the last few weeks of that pregnancy. During the lengthy labor my husband put ‘Raising Arizona’ on for me to watch. This film is absolutely guaranteed to make me chortle, but....nope. Nary a smile was cracked.

Ah, humor, you most challenging, subjective and goshdarn difficult of genres. Will I ever master you? My most recent attempt at making ‘em laugh is Mako’s Bounty, a science fiction romance from Decadent Publishing’s extremely diverse 1Night Stand line. When I started to write I knew I wanted it to make more people laugh than not, so I had a good think about the things that makeme laugh that also made lots of other people laugh too. I was trying to broaden the humor and thus increase the appeal to more people. I thought of what particularly amused me in romantic fiction, film and TV. Loretta Chase’s sparkling historical romance, The Duke of Scoundrels, Star Wars’ Han and Leia’s snarky relationship, David and Maddie, from the old TV show, Moonlighting, and the sizzling chemistry underlying their working relationship; these all had one thing in common - wonderful dialogue. That then, was my goal. To portray a relationship between two people who are, in fact, enemies by showing, through humorous banter, how they, quite literally, charm the pants off each other and laugh their way into each others’ hearts.

Did I succeed? Well, you will have to be the judge of that. I’m giving away an e-copy of Mako’s Bounty  to a reader of this blog. To enter the giveaway just tell us about something that made you grin, giggle or guffaw. Can’t wait to hear about your funnies! And thanks for reading.

Sci-Fi 1Night Stand? We've Got That!

For nine long months, at the behest of the evil Ravenscorp, Mako Dolan has been hunting the space pirate they call The Saint. Now she’s finally lured her prey to a one night stand with a mysterious woman—herself. But Vin Sainte is not at all what she expected. Far from being a ruthless space pirate, his main occupation seems to be rescuing nuns, adopting orphans and praying like a champ.
For nine long months Vin Sainte has been fleeing the bounty hunter from one temporary refuge to the next. Now he’s got Mako exactly where he wants her: weak from gravity sickness and ripe for conversion. Problem is he didn’t expect a foul-mouthed, hard-as-nails bounty hunter to be such a devoted daughter. His head on a platter is Ravenscorp’s price for her mother’s freedom.
They have less than twenty four hours. One will win; one will lose. Mako might be a fearsome predator, but Vin has the Lord on his side. Who will win the bounty?

EXCERPT

How freakin’ embarrassing. I’m wearing nothing but a draped towel, and a bloody dangerous space pirate is giving me goose bumps. He seemed to read her mind. The finger lifted and he spoke again. “I’m sorry, Makiko. I didn’t plan on our first meeting being quite like this.”
He had a delicious voice: deep and sonorous, with the drawled vowels of a born spacer. Mako reached down, pulled the towels and sheets around her, and rose to a sitting position. She shoved her hair back; it had dried in a crown of aggressive spikes. Trying to flatten them, she snuck her first peek at her elusive prey. Oh. My. God. The same face in the photo-pic, but so animated, so alive. His eyes were twinkling and the scar only added to the character of his face. Vin Sainte wasn’t just striking. He was undeniably and categorically…freakin’ gorgeous. She hadn’t breathed since she’d first seen him. She sucked in a deep breath and let it out slowly, wincing as she added a long mmmmmm to the sigh.
“But then again, I don’t think our meeting could be any better.” His lips quirked, spreading into an amused smile.
She felt like she’d been hit with an asteroid. She could feel him drinking her. Like…like…she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. His eyes shifted upward, his smile deepening.
“What a…unique hairstyle.”
Her hands shot to the resilient spikes, squeaking when she dropped the sheet that had covered her breasts. Grabbing it, she pulled it up to her chin. His eyes rose to hers, the scar through his brow enhancing his amused expression.
“I’m very happy to say you weren’t quite fast enough.”
What the hell? He’d caught a glimpse of the smallest breasts in the entire galaxy and was still enamored? Oh, lucky day! Her lips twitched. She fought it. Her lips won, and she grinned at him like a lovesick teenager.
“What sharp teeth you have. Do you bite, little Makiko?”
She did the unthinkable: she clutched at her sheet and giggled, her mind too fogged to come up with a sensible answer. I’m little? Me? I was the biggest, toughest girl in the colony school. He’d laid one finger on her and already had her in the wet spot. She wriggled in it with delight.
His grin expanded. “Let’s introduce ourselves properly.” He held out his hand. “I’m Vin Sainte.”

Bad Girls: What’s Not to Love?

by Diane Dooley
I have to admit it. There’s nothing I find more enjoyable than writing a bad-to-the-bone female character. Not so say that good girls aren’t fun, too, but the badder the character, the bigger the fall. The fall into love, that is. It’s a challenge, taking such a character on a journey to the better part of themselves, the part that is able to let down their defenses long enough for a connection to be made with another person. But it’s a challenge that I love, because, you know, bad girls deserve to live happily ever after, too.

Mako’s Bounty, a science fiction romance, releases today from Decadent Publishing. Makiko Dolan is the bounty hunter known as Mako the Shark, nicknamed thus due to the relentless manner in which she hunts her prey.  She’s one tough gal, who grew up on a bleak, company-owned mining colony in the asteroid belt. Due to some ill-advised youthful exploits, she is now in serious hock to the mining corporation who holds her mother’s contract. The only way she can pay off the debt is to capture and deliver the thorn in Ravenscorp’s side: the space pirate, Vin Sainte.

He’s been eluding her for months, but then Madame Evangeline enters the story. Who else but the good madam would realize that these two bandits could be perfect for each other? She sets them up on a one night stand... and much fun ensues.  You’ll have to read the story to find outexactly how much fun falling in love with an enemy can be. All I’ll say is that, throughout the writing of it, the story came splurging out of my brain in a cloud of bawdy laughter.  I sincerely hope you’ll get a giggle out of experiencing these two unlikely characters capturing each other’s hearts.

You can purchase this story HERE or read an excerpt HERE.To celebrate release day I am giving away a pdf copy of Mako’s Bounty. To enter the giveaway, please share with me the baddest character, male or female, you have ever loved.
