Writing misconceptions I’ve heard/seen on the web…

 By Gracen Miller

1. Writers have it easy. Ha! Anyone who thinks that I’ll lend you my temperamental Muse—Dom—for a few hours. Then I’ll sit back and giggle as I watch you suffer through his incessant chattering. I might hide so you can’t return him too soon either. My best guess, you’ll make it two hours…or less. When the characters get chatty along with him, it becomes a bit Sybil-ish in my head. Dom wants to chat the most when snuggled beneath the covers trying to sleep. If he were a snoring dog keeping me awake, I’d kick him out of my bed. But I can’t kick him out of my head! Writing is a full time job just like any other job. Not only do we spend countless hours and months writing our book, but we also have to polish it with the editor and then market it when it’s published. Writing is fun, but it’s a lot of hard repetitive work, too. By the time the book is published, I’m so sick of reading it I almost always hate the story.

2. Write it and it’ll become an overnight bestseller. Seriously? Pfft…in my dreams and a billion other author’s dreams!

3. Anyone can write a book. If it’s so easy, then go for it! Writing a book takes commitment and dedication, long hours of actually sitting down to write and not just crafting it in your head. Anyone can daydream up a story, but it takes skill to craft it into a good book.

4. Erotica is mommy porn and most writers of it have no real talent. Wrong! There are some well-written fantastic erotica out there with storyline not based on just sex. Decadent Publishing has gobs of it—and I’m not talking about my books.

5. Book Pirates only steal books they wouldn’t read in the first place so it doesn’t really hurt the author/publisher. Or…books are too expensive and this is the only way they can afford them. Wrong on both counts! First, pirates have ripped off my 99-cent book. How much cheaper do they need it? Free is the obvious answer, which negates their argument. When book pirates deprive authors/publishers of the proceeds from the sale of books, what do you think happens when profits aren’t realized? Authors are dropped and/or book prices continue to increase. It’s a trickle down effect like all retail. And let’s not forget…no one—not even the pirates—would ever work for free!

Do Writers Spend too Much Time in Their Heads?

Howdy Decadent readers! Do you think writers spend too much time in their heads?

I’m anti-social and I joke with my husband that my characters are more entertaining than real life people. I’m only half joking. Some of the work related parties I’ve had to endure for him, those pretentious, uptight gals would be difficult for anyone to tolerate.

But with school starting back to school this week, my Muse has been extra chatty in anticipation of uninterrupted writing time. So, I’ve spent a lot of time crafting scenes and working out dialogue in my head. My kids are talking and I’m fantasizing about what my characters are saying to one another. My husband is rambling about work and I’m masterminding detailed love scenes in my mind. On the television is one of my favorite T.V. shows, Lost Girl, and I’m creating a new monster to wreak havoc on my heroine/hero.

This daydreaming got me into a spot of hot water recently, too. My youngest son reminded me that I had promised to take him to Guitar Center to peruse the guitars. Basically, he wants to do a little eye-candy shopping and some fantasizing of his own. But apparently, that’s not all…I’ve agreed to let him spend his money on a new guitar.

What? Wait? Huh? He doesn’t have enough money for that and I’m not footing the rest. Here’s the clincher…I know I would never agree to this! Only one problem, my oldest is backing him, arguing vehemently that I agreed, which is strange because they never agree on anything—ever. It’s like a secret brother law or something that Moms don’t get.

I remind him that we always have family conversations before a boatload of money is shelled out for anything. He reminds me where we were, what we were doing and the exact conversation when I agreed to the SNAFU. And somewhere along the way of the retelling I have an “A-ha!” moment because that was when my characters were getting naughty during a hostage situation.

Big freaking gulp!

Yep, you guessed it, hot-freaking-water! I can’t confess to a ten year old that I was thinking about risqué dialogue that ended up in sexual positions during our conversation. But I’m not agreeing to a new guitar because of my inattention!

So, maybe sometimes writers do spend too much time in their heads. But if we didn’t, readers wouldn’t have the fabulous stories that we keep spinning!

I invite you to come take a sensual ride with my 1NS book, Fairy Casanova, or a hellish ride with my Road to Hell series, both released by Decadent Publishing!

Fairy Casanova Blurb:
Las Vegas lawyer, Sadie Sinclair, has hit rock bottom. Bankrupt, with her reputation ruined, and her fiancé is yachting Aruba with a hot babe. Desperate for a break from reality, she contacts 1NightStand and is shocked to discover she's been paired with a sexy fairy.

Jace is about to become King of the fairies. One minor glitch, he's obsessed with humans. Before becoming King, he wants one night with a human before he's forever forbidden from crossing into the human realm.  After a stellar night of sex, Jace is surprised to discover Sadie isn't just a human, but his mate.  Complicating everything with the revelation, he's willing to forfeit his kingdom for her, but Sadie must decide if he's worth the biggest gamble yet.

Fairy Casanova Excerpt:
Knocking once to warn her of his arrival, he used the key card to let himself into the room. The door clicked shut behind him as he scanned the room for his evening’s companion.

“Hello,” she said when their eyes met.

Her sultry voice tempted him, much as a Siren lured a man to his demise against the rocky coast of her island. His mortal Siren offered him a shy wave.

“Want a drink?” She held up a goblet, half-full of amber liquor.

Her edginess socked his acute fairy senses like a blow to the gut.

Interesting. Why was she here then?

“No, thanks.” He moved toward her, intrigued by the competing vibes the woman evoked…reserved and salacious.

Maybe other men found the arctic chill of her gaze daunting. He found it intriguing, even challenging. Women would be envious and intimidated by her high-level eroticism.

Stunning, and nothing like the fairies he would command. Long, shiny, black hair framed her oval face. He couldn't wait to get his fingers in the wavy locks. Gunmetal-silver eyes warily watched him. Rimmed in a thin stripe of black eyeliner and splashed with a smidge of dark-gray shadow, the contrast brought out the stellar shade of her irises. High cheekbones, a slightly upturned nose, and wide lips, naturally dark red, or she'd been biting them in anxiety. Unlike the diminutive fairy-women, she was tall—not more than an inch or two shorter than his five-ten height. Most female fairies barely reached his chest, which made her a charming oddity. And she owned killer curves—again, unlike most beanpole-thin fairies—and those curves were framed in an evocative, skintight, black cocktail dress.

Jace stopped in front of her and stared at her mouth. He knew many places he wanted those lips, but mostly he wanted them rounded on an orgasmic scream.

“I'm Jace.”

She swallowed and cleared her throat, but her voice came out low and raspy. “Sadie.”

He dipped his finger into the crystal glass she held poised below her chin. A fat droplet of liquor clung to his forefinger, and he spread it across her pouty bottom lip. Her eyes widened, and her breathing noticeably accelerated. As if prompted, her tongue swiped away the moisture, and his cock twitched in reaction.

“You're perfect. Stunning.”

She laughed, a charming sound, as a blush crept across her cheeks. For the first time since beginning his adventure, he considered the horrible ramifications of falling hard for a human. Impossible! There wouldn't be enough time to grow attached to a one-night stand. Neither would his parents nor soon-to-be subjects approve.

Taboo Sex

By Gracen Miller

Sex. It’s a natural, beautiful act, so why is it such a hush-hush topic with some individuals? Friends admit they love their e-readers because no one knows they’re reading a “trashy romance novel”. Hmm…I’ve never worried what others thought when I read something spicy.

Why is sex such a taboo topic? Why do we pretend no one is doing it, especially when our TV shows and advertisement are riddled with it? I mean, come on, we all know sex sells. And sells big. Then why is sex on TV okay, but not in books? *blink* I don’t understand the double standard…especially when orgasmic sex is so fantastic. We should be embracing the act!

Is it more taboo to read sex than watch it? Does reading erotica stimulate us more than watching TV? God, I hope so! But what does that say about us writers of the naughty stuff? A wicked mind is a terrible thing to waste, eh? That’s my theory and I’m committed to it!

When I write a sex scene I want the reader to feel everything as if they are living the experience along with the characters. If the reader isn’t aroused, then I’ve failed them as an author. I want the booklover turning to their significant other or grabbing a fresh set of batteries after reading one of my scenes.

My suggestion…before you embrace the 1Night Stand series, stockpile batteries and warn your significant other that he/she will be called to active duty. ;-)

CONTEST is below, so be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom!!!

Fairy Casanova

by Gracen Miller
Every woman needs a Fairy Casanova…and I’m not talking about the rakish type of Casanova, but the one that gives mind-blowing pleasure because he gets satisfaction from your bliss. But how many of us really think of fairies as sexual creatures? Or even attribute them with sexy qualities? Typically when I think of fairies, I think of mystical, otherworldly females, almost always they are diminutive, while some are sweet and helpful and others are mischievous firebrands.

When you hear the word fairy, do you think of small, ethereal creatures—like Tinkerbell?—that fly about like a hummingbird? Do you imagine them so small they recline on tulips or other flowers? Are they mischief makers, helpers or a mixture of the two? And they almost always have wings, right? And do you ever think of them in a sexual way?

Wikipedia states that while current society illustrates them as winged, radiant creatures, they were originally portrayed much differently from our modern day ideology. One concept, they are tall, angelic creatures with a radiant disposition. Hmm…that could definitely fit my Fairy Casanova storyline. A second concept depicts them as diminutive, wrinkled troll-like beings. Yeah, so totally not sexy. The idea of wings came about in Victorian era artwork, but interestingly, in the original folklore, wings were rare. Instead, fairies flew with magic or on stems of ragwort or birds. This is a much different ideology than what I envision. How about you?

Folk beliefs identified fairies as:

1. Dead. Fairies were ghosts. Hmm…I cannot see myself being scared of a fairy ghost, but that’s probably because I visualize them as little people wearing wings! LOL
2. Demoted angels. Hmm…interesting, but this belief isn’t talking about fallen angels. Rather, angels that were caught between heaven and hell when God locked the doors to heaven. Well, that doesn’t seem fair! Another notion is that they weren’t bad enough for Hell and weren’t good enough for heaven. Wonders if this is similar to a purgatory concept…hmmm?
3. Demons. There sure is a lot of God folklore associated with fairies.
4. Babies Laugh. I love this idea! In a story about Peter Pan, author J.M. Barrie of The Little White Bird, said, “When the first baby laughed for the first time, his laugh broke into a million pieces, and they all went skipping about. That was the beginning of fairies.”

There are more beliefs and legends on fairies, but I’ll let you read about them on your own at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy if you’re interested.

In my short erotic romance e-book, Fairy Casanova—part of Decadent Publishing’s 1NightStand series—a very human woman discovers she has scheduled a one-night stand with a very real fairy. Would you believe someone without proof if they told you they were a fairy? I sure wouldn’t and…well, here’s how the heroine takes the news. While you’re reading it, think how you would react:

“I’m going to peel your garment from your body, slowly”—she groaned again at the vivid imagery—”and taste every inch of your human flesh.”
Human flesh?
She froze against his body. What a strange thing to say.
Sadie leaned back to stare at him. “You don’t think you’re…human?” She hesitated uttering the word human for fear of his answer.
“I’m not human.”
The response she’d feared receiving.
“Madame Evangeline didn’t impart I’m a fairy?”
She blinked, tried to process the information, and failed. “Mmhmm…a fairy?” Her stomach pitched to the floor. “Really? Wow.” Finally, she understood how her request had come into play. She’d checked off otherworldly, not expecting much more than someone who believed in aliens or something equally eccentric. But a sexy fairy, ready to be her one-night stand…He didn’t really expect her to believe that, did he? She lived and breathed balderdash in the courtroom, and she could sniff out lies better than a hound dog could sniff out quarry. “You’re a fairy? Give me a break.”
“It’s true.”
Sadie glared at him, any amusement she might have felt shifting straight into irritation. “How fantastic for you.” And horrifying for me!
Jace grinned, exposing straight white teeth, and he went from gorgeous to pussy-throbbing—forget heart-throbbing. He affected the lower region of her anatomy far too much for the latter description. Maybe she shouldn’t let it bother her that he was crazy. If he kept talking that fairy business, he’d end up in a nuthouse—assuming he wasn’t an escapee already.
“I can prove it.”
“How? You going to morph into a tiny fairy with gossamer wings?”
He laughed, and the rich timbre of the sound washed over her sensitized skin like a deep-body massage. Nut job or not, she couldn’t deny his lethal pheromones.
“Not exactly.”
He released her, and Sadie instantly felt lonely, and suddenly cold, outside of his embrace. Jace took a couple of steps backward and tugged his shirt out of his jeans. As his fingers went to the first button on his shirt, she realized she still held the glass of whiskey. No longer wanting the liquid fortitude, she placed it on the bar, watching him. His gaze roamed along her figure as he freed the buttons, exposing a little more skin with each release.
Her eyes were drawn to his dark nipples and a smattering of hair in the middle of his chest, a shade lighter than the hair on his head. The final button gave free, uncovering a dark trail of hair below his belly-button that dipped into his jeans. A path to guide her exploration. Very nice.
“Brace yourself.”
Sadie swallowed hard and tore her gaze from his chest as he rubbed his hands together. The sparkle in his honey eyes held hers hostage.
“This is where it gets unusual and otherworldly.” Jace winked, and her mouth dropped open in a silent, shocked breath. Not because he stripped off his shirt and tossed it aside—even though the baring of his chest certainly rendered her with a prolonged case of mute-itis—but because he knew two of her four one-nighter requirements. His toned abdomen rippled with defined strength, and his arms sported muscular definition. “I don’t give a shit about your Uncle Sam. And I’m not married.”
“Madame Evangeline let you see my requests?”Well, duh! So much for demonstrating her natural talent to bullshit her way through any situation, a flair which normally aided her well in the courtroom.
“She texted them.”
“What’d you ask for?”
“I asked for someone open-minded and willing to embrace the paranormal.”
Riiiiight. She’d never been accused of being a paranormal embracer. Scary movies made her cry. The first page of a horror book sequestered her beneath the covers, praying nothing limped out of her closet or crawled from underneath her bed. She flat out did not do “paranormal”. As for “open-minded”…Ha! She was an attorney, which pretty much explained everything.
Something wispy and diaphanous rose from behind him, curled outward like a long roll of parchment—or tinfoil—but much more striking than either.
Wings!
A deep shade of red tipped and interlaced throughout with black to create random diamond-shaped designs on gossamer wings?
“My God…” Sadie’s voice trailed off as she stared in wonder, forgetting she’d thought him crazy moments before. They were beautifully constructed, and when he presented his back to her, she realized they were almost as tall as he was. Dangling from the base of each wing were fat, blood-red droplets at least an inch in circumference, almost grazing the carpeted floor. Compelled to touch his wings, she stroked one and then the other. Gauzy soft, they felt paper thin as they shimmied beneath her hands. “How do you keep from ripping them?”
“They’re sturdier than they look.” He peeked over his shoulder. “Believe me now, Sadie?”

Jace wasn’t crafted to fit any of the folk lore beliefs I listed above, because I don’t like sticking with the traditional roles of paranormal creatures. He’s humanoid in nature, from another dimension that isn’t related to heaven or hell, and, yes, he is sexy. His wings aren’t just pretty or used to fly about, but they are very nimble and useful. He has very real problems, just like any human does, and he’s obsessed with human women.

Fairy Casanova released today!

How did I come up with Fairy Casanova? The story behind the story is kind of boring actually. Fairy Casanova was one of those stories that wrote itself, the perfect story for us writers.

I was between books when the call for the 1NightStand stories came from Decadent. My muse—named DM—was antsy, wanting to write, but not eager to start the next book in the Road to Hell series until we knew changes made to Pandora’s Box were approved. If you read any of my Facebook wall posts, then you know DM is an evil genius I have a love/hate relationship with. He is definitely the devil on my shoulder and he was driving me nuts with inactivity. And there’s nothing worse than a writer with nothing to write!

Then the 1NightStand story call came from Decadent. I’d never written anything so short and nothing based totally on sex, but I loved the guidelines. Simple, yet fun, pure genius from the crafters! I didn’t know if I could write such a short story, but I looked at it as a challenge. Something fun to attempt and an easy way to flex my writing skills. It also gave DM some constructive focus, a plus when you have a fidgety muse on your hands. I figured if my 1NS story took on a life of its own and outgrew the 12k word limit, then I’d nix the 1NS parameters and submit it to DP as a stand-alone story. Committed to the project, my next step was deciding on the storyline.

The names of the characters popped into my head right away…Sadie and Jace. It’s fantastic when characters name themselves! I was contemplating a fairy tattoo at the time, so I knew immediately Jace needed to be a fairy and I’d never written about fairies either, so it was another fun challenge thrown into the mix. Sadie was my only glitch. DM insisted she needed to be running from something and desperate for a night of escapism. But what? I decided to throw in something I knew a little bit about, the legal world. I’m a paralegal and I know how attorneys throw their heart and soul into a case. It was easy imagining Sadie betting her career and reputation on one big case, and then needing to escape her real-world trials when she’d lost everything.

And there you have it…Fairy Casanova was born.

Sadie has hit rock bottom. A high-powered attorney on the fast-track to creating a name, she bet everything on one case and lost big. Bankrupt, with her professional reputation ruined, and her fiancé yachting about Aruba with a hot babe, she's desperate for a break from reality. She arranges a one-nighter with a complete stranger through Madame Evangeline's high-end dating service, 1NightStand. A fairy isn't what she expected to hook-up with, but how can she be disappointed when royalty turns into the only king of sex she'll ever want?

In less than a week, Jace is about to become king of the fairies, but he's enamored with humans. Before his coronation, he wants to fulfill his sexual fantasies in the human realm. With a limited timeline, he schedules a liaison with a stranger through 1NightStand.com. Sadie intrigues him with her competing reserved and salacious vibes. After a night of stellar sex, Jace offers Sadie a permanent place in his life as his queen. Will she forfeit her life in the human realm to accept his offer?

“The dress is perfect. You are perfect.” He kissed her without fanfare, and she melted against him. Any thought of resisting his aggressive embrace fled as he parted her lips with his and plunged his tongue inside. The wet glide of his osculation affected her as much as a shot of hard liquor, a sizzling burn spreading from the pit of her belly and settling lower. Sadie groaned when he playfully nipped her bottom lip. “I’m going to peel your garment from your body, slowly”—she groaned again at the vivid imagery—”and taste every inch of your human flesh.”
