Bad Girls: What’s Not to Love?

by Diane Dooley
I have to admit it. There’s nothing I find more enjoyable than writing a bad-to-the-bone female character. Not so say that good girls aren’t fun, too, but the badder the character, the bigger the fall. The fall into love, that is. It’s a challenge, taking such a character on a journey to the better part of themselves, the part that is able to let down their defenses long enough for a connection to be made with another person. But it’s a challenge that I love, because, you know, bad girls deserve to live happily ever after, too.

Mako’s Bounty, a science fiction romance, releases today from Decadent Publishing. Makiko Dolan is the bounty hunter known as Mako the Shark, nicknamed thus due to the relentless manner in which she hunts her prey.  She’s one tough gal, who grew up on a bleak, company-owned mining colony in the asteroid belt. Due to some ill-advised youthful exploits, she is now in serious hock to the mining corporation who holds her mother’s contract. The only way she can pay off the debt is to capture and deliver the thorn in Ravenscorp’s side: the space pirate, Vin Sainte.

He’s been eluding her for months, but then Madame Evangeline enters the story. Who else but the good madam would realize that these two bandits could be perfect for each other? She sets them up on a one night stand... and much fun ensues.  You’ll have to read the story to find outexactly how much fun falling in love with an enemy can be. All I’ll say is that, throughout the writing of it, the story came splurging out of my brain in a cloud of bawdy laughter.  I sincerely hope you’ll get a giggle out of experiencing these two unlikely characters capturing each other’s hearts.

You can purchase this story HERE or read an excerpt HERE.To celebrate release day I am giving away a pdf copy of Mako’s Bounty. To enter the giveaway, please share with me the baddest character, male or female, you have ever loved.

Blurb: For nine long months, at the behest of the evil Ravenscorp, Mako Dolan has been hunting the space pirate they call The Saint. Now she’s finally lured her prey to a one night stand with a mysterious woman—herself. But Vin Sainte is not at all what she expected. Far from being a ruthless space pirate, his main occupation seems to be rescuing nuns, adopting orphans and praying like a champ.
For nine long months Vin Sainte has been fleeing the bounty hunter from one temporary refuge to the next. Now he’s got Mako exactly where he wants her: weak from gravity sickness and ripe for conversion. Problem is he didn’t expect a foul-mouthed, hard-as-nails bounty hunter to be such a devoted daughter. His head on a platter is Ravenscorp’s price for her mother’s freedom.
They have less than twenty four hours. One will win; one will lose. Mako might be a fearsome predator, but Vin has the Lord on his side. Who will win the bounty?

  1. Bad girl but she has redeeming qualities - right? I think if you want the baddest character I've ever come to love - it has to be Alan Rickman in Robin Hood - his line about cancelling Christmas always makes me laugh and when he's telling the women to come to his room one after the other.

Oh, yes! Alan Rickman has played a bad guy several times and he always brings wonderful nuances to his roles.

  2. You know me, I love ALL the bad ones. It all started with Morgoth in the Silmarillion :). My most recent baddy crush, however, would have to be Lisbeth in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The kick, OMG, the kick! Why did Daniel Craig have to pick vanilla? *sigh* Anyway, I'm stranded here in Mexico in dire need of more reading material. Take pity. And congrats on your release date, darling Do, it's wonderful to see you doing so well.
