Celebrating my newest release, the
print anthology of my last five 1NS stories; Shadowed Desires, I found
myself struggling with just what materials to promote its release with. Being a
print book, I’m dying to know what giveaways would peak curiosity and spark
that burning desire to get this book!
Self-promotion is likely one of the
most challenging aspects I have encountered in becoming a published author. Once
you’ve finished writing it, re-writing, and polishing until it shines, the
contract gets signed and your dream of having it published soon comes to
fruition. But… then what? The easy part is done, then the extra work begins.
Social media, cards, covers, ads,
magnets, it goes on and on. I have to admit, unless I’m planning to attend a
big event, such as a book signing or convention, I don’t put a lot of time or
thought into this ongoing dilemma, but as of late, I realize how important it
is to have things for giveaways and contests.
As a reader, and fan of many great
authors, I personally cherish the swag I’ve managed to pick and choose along
promotion alley, but aside from that, I find I don’t always know what to do
with a lot of the items I receive. I don’t hoard by any means, so having useful
items that won’t be wasted is important to me. This quandary prompted me to
question, as an author, working at self-promotion, what would readers enjoy most
for swag? Bookmarks, matches, flashlights….and then it hit me; why not ask the
readers?
What gets your attention for upcoming
releases? What keeps your attention for backlist books? What turns you off and
doesn’t spark that urge to read, re-read or track down your favourite author’s
newest release?
