Fragments of Ourselves in Each and Every Serving

Buy Dom of the Dead HERE

By Virginia Nelson
One of the first questions I get asked when I tell people I write books is, “Do you use real life for the stories?” My answer is fragments.
Retelling reality would be boring—no one would read, “So then I got the flu and I was five minutes late to pick up my kids from school and…”
But there are fragments that for whatever reason stick out and, as a writer, you have the unique opportunity to, as Debra Dixon said in a recent luncheon speech, write what you know.
In Dom of the Dead, my newest 1Night Stand story, we join the action with Carson standing by the casket of her best friend, the man she loves. She’s held it together to that point…until she reaches out to hold his hand and his fingers don’t close around hers. Then she shatters.
This fragment of storytelling happened in my real life. Upon the death of a dear friend, I held it together. I actually remember worrying because I wasn’t crying…was there something wrong with me?
My mother showed up at the funeral home and asked me to go to the casket with her. I did. She said, “You know you can touch him, right?”
I remember thinking, “Pfft. Of course I know that.” I reached out and held his hand. When his fingers didn’t close around mine—he always held my hand when our fingers touched—suddenly it became real. Up until that moment, he wasn’t gone, not really, for me. Given that hard evidence—if he was alive he would hold my hand—I shattered. I don’t think I stopped crying for a week solid from that moment on.
Nothing else in that story comes from reality, but in every story we capture moments, snippets in time that stick out to us. I think, because it matters and because we’ve lived it, breathed it, smelled it, or felt it…it makes the stories more real, more vibrant, and more compelling to the reader. What are your thoughts?

Dom of the Dead Blurb:

She couldn’t imagine living without him.

After Carson Black’s longtime crush and best friend, Randall Stokes, dies in a motorcycle accident, she openly weeps at his funeral. In the ensuing days and weeks of inconsolable grief, she hears his voice, smells his scent, feels his desires. She must be going mad.

He was afraid to demand what he needed.

Dominant Randall Stokes loves Carson but never expressed it while alive, never daring to dream the sweet girl next door could be the submissive he needed to find satisfaction. But after his death, a much clearer perspective of her needs, wants, and desires emerges.

A ghost of a chance…

Is it too late to have what they’ve both longed for?

About the Author:
Virginia Nelson spends her days chasing three very active kids around.  When she is not doing this, or plotting taking over the world, she likes to write, play in the mud, drive far too fast and scream at inanimate objects.  She can often be found listening to music that is far too loud and typing her next fantastic tale of blood, sex and random acts of ineptitude.  Romance, in Ms. Nelson’s opinion, is not about riding off into the sunset on the back of a horse with the knight in shining armor—it is about riding the dragon.  If the knight can keep up… well, that is love.

Wyk's Surrender

By Dakota Trace

So recently, well about six months ago, I was talking to my editor about the books I had planned to write this summer. (Or attempted to write, due to the kidlets being out of school). During the conversation, she’d asked if I was ever going to give my 1NS couple from Blind Need, Xaviera and Nate, another story…or at least check in with them.  I, of course, was stumped. I fell in love with my blind heiress and her hunky smoke-jumper, but I wasn’t sure where else to take their story or how continued it within the constraints of the 1NS series. So when I posted to the blog in February, I wrote an article about what happens after the 1Night Stand and about readers wanting to know more about what happened to the characters. I got several answers to that questions from other helpful 1NS authors and a few of the readers.

It did get me to thinking and I finally managed to answer that question. When I penned my most recent contribution for the 1NS line, Wyk’s Surrender, Xaviera and Nate along with Lucy managed to sneak their way into my story. Xaviera appears as the cousin of Venus Spinazzola-Navarro, my heroine.  While they may be cousins, they are quite different.  Not only is Xaviera a wine heiress, she grew up in sunny California, while Venus grew up on the streets of the Windy city and is an executive assistant to a department head of a lucrative firm in Chicago. While Xaviera was a bit of recluse, Venus is in your face, dares to tread where only angels dare and isn’t afraid of her size or sexuality. (And yes, she’s a what most consider to be BBW.) Because of her uniqueness it was a great fun to write Venus’s story.  Like her cousin, Venus has a take charge attitude and has no issue standing on her own two feet, or holding her own against her boss.  Which is probably why she’s a FemDom.

But speaking of her boss, Chadwyk, or Wyk as he prefers to be called, was a challenge to write, and why? Well because Wyk, the epitome of a successful black businessman, kept whispering in my ear how he wanted to explore his sexually submissive fantasies with his assistant. Talk about a real eye opener.  So not only did I have a strong female character…who was a FemDom, I had a strong alpha male in the boardroom who wanted to submit.  Sounds like a match made in heaven, right? One would think.  But of course my muse, Livvy, had to make it difficult for me.  She decided that I just couldn’t give them a straight forward story – you know Venus walking into Wyk’s office for a little afternoon delight. No they both had to have reasons why they couldn’t give into their obvious desire – the same reasons Madame Eve had to step in and arrange their…date and a reason to head out to Vegas.

Well, that’s how Xaviera and Nate snuck in.  I won’t spill the beans about why Venus is meeting her cousin and sexy man in Vegas…or even why or how Wyk ends up in Vegas at the same time but needless to say…in the city of love…anything is possible. Even a chance to believe the impossible can happen.

Inspiration and Crazy Adventures

Buy The Playground HERE

By Sascha Illyvich

When I started my next submission for Decadent Publishing's 1NS line, currently titled "Dark Knight" I knew I needed to work in the obvious elements of a good story, plus the elements of the line to get them to bite.

The inspiration for my hopeful came from the same place I get all my creative story ideas from.  Yes, personal experience plays a part in all of this.  In my hopeful for Decadent, I modeled the character after all my 1NS heroines, choosing to use someone close to me.  She'll remain nameless but let's say she is well aware of all the hot sex in the story, even going so far as to get the good parts from me and share them with a group of people she KNOWS will buy this story once Decadent contracts it.

You can see my ego knows no bounds, right?

My previous 1NS book Menage Bound, Siddella and Jason actually are based on people too but to be honest, Jason sort of snuck in.  I won't say where I know this swarthy Latino from or what cigars he smokes, but I can say that I pumped him up in size, stature and dominance so the real Jason (if that was his name) and the story Jason (that IS his real name) aren't all that easy to compare.

Buy Menage Bound HERE
All of the stories I've crafted for Decadent have a similar theme and for once it's NOT redemption.  While that does play a part in The Playground it's not the overall theme.  Trust is.

In all three stories a choice must be made.  Trust myself to try a new thing, or trust that my life will continue to suck if I go about things the way I have been. I've been fascinated by human kind ever since coming to terms with the recent fact that I apparently am not superman, and watching, putting these experiences into stories helps me draw some sort of closure on life, as I'm sure it helps others to understand me . It also serves for the fantasy background of so many readers looking for an escape.

Buy Surrender to Love HERE
Siddella had to let go and trust Jason and Chase to deliver what they promised they could.  Livia had to trust herself to grow with the help of Bruce, in Surrender to Love.  And of course we've talked about Devon and Shelly's trust issues.

So, dear reader, I ask you this:  Will you trust me to provide you with a brief, yet eloquently steamy love story published by the fine folks at Decadent Publishing?  Each word has been selected for its use in choice cuts of the story, with loving care, hand crafted from me to you via our seamless delivery system?

Setting your Limits

By Erykah Wyck
There has been so much talk and controversy lately about BDSM. Some good and some bad. So many women have read a certain book (one which I will not name here for it doesn’t need my free advert) and they say they want a man just like that hero. But those who might be termed vanilla might wish to learn more about BDSM before allowing someone to whip them. Saying to your husband I read this seen and it was so hot, isn’t always a wise decision.

There are so many places to start. Safe words, color signals all important but what about your limits. Do you know them?  If you are new to lifestyle, it’s doubtful. And what do you do when a soft limit becomes a hard limit?

Soft Limit: A limit that the Submissive or the Dominant set. And altho
Buy Night of the Doms HERE
ugh this is a limit now you might be interested in changing it at some point.

Hard Limit: Absolute no. This is a place that you have no interest in going or trying. These may be limits set by medical reasons. This is a deal breaker.

Buy Learning to Submit HERE
Each person’s limits might be different for some their hard limit is someone else’ssoft limit.  For me a hard limit is anything involving mutilation, needles, piercings, or blades. But for some that’s a soft limit.   What you need to do is research what you want to do with your partner. If your partner is new to the lifestyle too then it’s even more important that they understand your limits and what they mean.  They need to make sure that they are doing things safely. It is both parties responsibility to keep the submissive safe.  There are classes out there to teach Dom’s their art.  It’s in everyone’s best interest to be the best they can be.

So what are your limits? Tell me and I'll give one commenter a book from my backlist!

Making Time

Buy Maggie's Secret Wish HERE

By Starla Kaye
I was catching up on reading some of the 1NS blogs and caught Heather Long’s “BeYourself” and Olivia Starke’s “Starving Authors.” They hit home with me in different ways and inspired me, I guess. Not that I’m carrying on with their thoughts, but more getting deeper into mine.

Life gets so absolutely crazy sometimes that we can’t possibly fit one more thing into our schedule. At least that is how I feel, especially lately. My terrific editors would like to see more work from me. My fans ask about sequels. My muse gets all excited and fills my head with a hundred different story ideas.

Fortunately I don’t work besides being a full-time author. Still there are community activities that I’m involved in that take the place of working and can almost be more demanding. One of my writers’ groups depends on me for leadership in so many of its projects, since I was a founding member many years ago. Another writers’ group would like to see me be involved again, if only I had the time. The seniors at my church seem to live for the monthly newsletter I do for them and get frustrated when it is occasionally a week late (I’ve been doing it for 18 years now). The cultural arts group I volunteer coordinate at a senior center would like me to go with them to their numerous outings (I don’t have their kind of stamina). The center’s director wants me to teach writing classes and about making art quilts.

And then there is my family. My BFF/daughter lives halfway across the country and likes me to come see her at least 3-4 times a year. My older brother in another state wants me to come see him. Two family reunions (different sides of my family) want me to join in their events. My sister tries to steal as much of my time as she can manage for going to gardening workshops, taking an exercise class with her, spending time together making art quilts, going to watch her teenagers play in tennis tournaments, and anything else she can come up with. My husband is really the only one of my family that doesn’t put demands on my time, especially this time of year. He’s an accountant (CPA) and he’s crazy busy now, too.

After listing all of that, I’m terrified, overwhelmed. How can I possibly meet all of those needs? How can I make everyone happy? Do you ever feel that way?

I guess what it comes down to is that so popular word today: prioritizing. Unfortunately, I’m not very good at that. I want to do it all. I want to make everyone happy. What about me?

Maybe I just need to fill the bathtub up with a nice steamy bath and lots of bubbles. Take in a glass of wine and my Kindle. Turn on some background music and tune out the world. Enjoy a nice long breather…and then emerge hopefully revived and ready to kick some serious ass, get into high gear again and be Super Woman.

In my first story with 1 Night Stand, Maggie’s Secret Wish, Maggie is a busy career woman. She’s struggled with relationships and is more comfortable with her work and dreaming about her fantasies. A part of her would like to see her “secret wish” come true, but she’s certain it won’t ever happen. But Madame Eve has other ideas about that…

Freedom Through Submission

Buy The Playground HERE!

By Sascha Illyvich
In all my 1Night Stand stories, the heroine tends to submit, giving of herself to the man in charge with hopes of a higher degree of love.  Since the stories are short, love is a hard bit to portray but I try my best and hopefully have hooked readers into my world, where I have much longer stories awaiting you.

The thing about submission, straight up is that it is NOT a weakness.  Submissive people are far from doormats, we cannot express this ideal enough.  I as a dominant am merely an actor, portraying a God, a figure, an Idol that controls, but the fact is, in this Lifestyle, in my stories, the true power is held by the submissives.

Buy HERE
Yet what is that power given to them by their so called gods?  In Surrender toLove, the outcome is hopefully one where Livia learns to find her own inner power, thus freeing her of her creative block.  She also seeks as an artist to understand the human condition from a powerful position, and from the experience of an oddball in her world.

A male submissive.

That's right, Bruce is the opposite of that poseur, Christian Grey (from 50 Shades infamy) in that he's giving over true power to someone else, while seeking release from his hectic life and past.  Also, unlike Grey, Bruce is a REAL master of his world, hence why he feels comfort in coming to Livia through the 1Night Stand series.   They form a harmony in his education of her on true power, and the scene I chose, having her face the window while only wearing lingerie and being tied to a chair, emphasizes the beginning of trust.  Romance novels are after all, the epitome of the heroine's journey, which is about trust.  When Livia allows this handsome, well dressed man to show her the ropes, literally and figuratively, she is allowing us a glimpse of who she can be, and showing herself what the pinnacle of her life could be.

Enjoy the excerpt, hopefully you'll pick up the story and come begging back for me…er, more.

Dreaming Up a Fantasy

Buy Maggie's Secret Wish HERE

By Starla Kaye
The first thing I come up with when I start a new story is the title. Every writer is different about that, many working with just a temporary title or simply calling it “Work In Process.” Not me. My title defines the story. My characters come from it.

When I came up with the title Maggie’s SecretWish, I knew two things immediately (as did the reader). First, there would be a heroine in the story named Maggie. Second, she had a secret wish. It needed to be special, something she wouldn’t flat out admit to almost anyone else.

Most of us are like Maggie, in that we lead lives where we present a certain image to those we work with, have acquaintances with, or share our basic lives with. A lot of us have another side that we show to very few people, if anybody else. That protected image of ourselves knows our innermost fears, longings, dreams…secret wishes. Maybe that “secret” person inside you wanted to be a grand adventurer, to travel to other worlds, or to be a super spy. Or maybe you have a bit more wild “secret wish,” something you wouldn’t want everyone to know about.

This is my Maggie. She leads a somewhat dull life as a website designer who spends a great deal of time alone. The men she typically dates are nice, but oh-so-boring. Deep inside her she wants more. With a basically lackluster love life, she reads erotica, dreams of doing much more than just slam-bam-thank-you-ma’am sex.  Beyond that she discovers an interest in light BDSM, mainly about spanking. She’s not particularly interested in anything harsh or super painful. She just wonders what it would be like to experience a bit of sting from a man’s hand connecting with her bare bottom. This isn’t something she would share with her family or friends. Yet she fantasizes about having at least one encounter with a man who is not vanilla, a man who is willing to show his dominate side.

Fortunately for Maggie, Madame Eve somehow knows her secret wish…and she knows the right man to fulfill it.

Thanks for stopping by.

Leave a comment admitting whether or not you have a slightly spicy secret wish of your own. You don’t have to do more than say “yes” or “no.” I’m the first to admit that YES I have one. One lucky person who leaves a comment will win an ebook copy of Maggie’s Secret Wish AND a small container of Rose Petal Soap Flakes. You can take a nice bath; maybe read of a hot romance while you soak,
or just do some dreaming about your “secret wish.”

Watching Airplanes

By Wendi Zwaduk

When I went to college, I had no idea I would end up being so interested in airplanes. Why? I was just a silly art student. Flying or learning how to fly never factored into what I wanted to do. But this is where romance, flying and my future all intersected.

Enter DH – the darling husband.

He’s a pilot and knows the ins and outs of airports. I thought he was cute. I got to know him and learned how to fly. Okay, so I’m not going to go up in the air any time soon. I never got my pilot’s license and landings aren’t really my thing. But spending time with him meant watching the Weather Channel to see what the weather would be wherever he planned to fly to.  We spent a lot of time hanging out at the airport talking to other pilots, helping out where needed and watching the planes take off and land. For most people, this probably wouldn’t be the most exciting way to date. There’s a lot that goes on at a smaller airport and yet, it can get pretty boring, too.

But I took a lot away from the time there. I know my Lear from my King Air, I know what a prop is versus a jet and I can tell you when the plane is coming in too high and hot.

All this information helped me to write my 1Night Stand novella, One More Night. I knew the hero was a pilot and I could understand his longing to fly when he can’t. Pilots are like Marines – once a pilot, always a pilot. They train their gaze to the sky and heaven help when you drive past an airport. They have to look. So I could identify with my hero—the good and the bad.

Then there was the heroine. She’s not super keen on flying—kind of like me when I met DH. She likes it enough to go along, but jet fuel is certainly not in her blood. But, the hero is. Quite a quandary, not knowing what you want even when he’s standing right in front of you.

Speaking of being in front of me, DH helped me with a critical scene in One More Night. Without him and his technical experience, I wouldn’t have been able to depict the scene with the proper detail. I’m glad I had him around for that—well, that and other things. Grin.

So what about you? Authors, how do your experiences enliven your books? And readers, same for you. How does the things you’ve been through color the way you read books? Hopefully when you read One More Night, you’ll feel the same zeal for flying I have.

I like my men “hot” and vulnerable

by Starla Kaye

I admit that there are plenty of everyday men who make great everyday heroes. I’m even married to one of them, what he refers to as “just another boring accountant.” But he is so much more than that. Still, even though he likes to tell everyone that he is the model for the heroes I write about, he really isn’t. I write fiction, stories in which my readers and I escape from reality. Stories where I create men that can excite and stimulate and …well, you understand.

Ian, my Scottish hunk of a hero, was going through that typical “I just turned forty, Oh My God!” moment in Maggie’sSecret Wish. He was floundering, questioning what he was doing with his life and what he really wanted to do. (Something many of us, myself included, have faced in our lives.) His life wasn’t awful as an erotica writer and as a professional Dom. But he wanted more. There had been a time when he’d hoped to one day settle down with a woman and have a family. After his years of living with his quirks, he didn’t think he was suitable husband material. He is depressed about his future and certain the one-night-stand arrangement he’d reluctantly agreed to couldn’t work out well. Yes, he could satisfy Maggie’s secret wish, but other than that… She deserved a better man than he.

In Starting Over, I had two strong, yet vulnerable heroes. Corbin is now divorced after many years of trying to make a marriage work, one that really never had a chance. Now he is struggling to begin a new chapter in his life, get back into the dating game…as a gay man this time. He is scared to death; especially about going through with a one-night-stand arrangement his ex-wife had more or less pushed him into. Matt is dealing with the pain of losing the man he’d been certain was his mate for life. His family had written him off years ago when he’d admitted to being gay. He’d searched for someone who love him and whom he could trust with his love, finding it with Henri. Now he goes home alone, has no one to share things with. Loneliness clawing at him, he decides to take a chance at finding a man much like himself…even if only for one night.

The CEO AndThe Cowboy also involves two very special, “hot,” and vulnerable heroes. Calhoun has just witnessed the wedding of the woman he’d been engaged to for five years and never could walk down the aisle with. He has had a secret longing that he has never acknowledged and is still afraid to embrace. He meets a friend of his ex’s husband at the wedding, a striking man with a sexually enticing scrutiny. The man unnerves him even as he arouses him. Daniel is immediately drawn to the ruggedly handsome cowboy, his “hot guy” inner warning system going crazy. But he’s not really on the hunt for a new man in his life. He’s still dealing with the hurt and betrayal of his last lover.

Do you have a favorite “hot” hero that haunts you with moments of “if only”? Share at least his name in a comment and take a chance at being the one lucky commenter to win a Surprise gift. The winner will be chosen September 12, but the gift won’t be sent until after September 27 (when I get back from vacationing in France).

True Power in the form of a Dominant

by Sascha Illyvich

Welcome to my world.  I'm an erotic romance author with thirteen years of Lifestyle/BDSM experience and am going to share with you what I think makes a successful dominant outside of our reading experiences in erotic bondage

What makes a successful man?  If we’ve muddled through Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, we’ve probably figured out a great sleeping method!  The book was written in 1920 something and language-wise, was a sleeper.  But there are factors here that help us define the successful man and Dominant in BDSM too.  But most of you are probably readers of erotic romance

The following factors I believe are key to writing successful dominant men in erotic fiction:

Confidence – In himself first and foremost.  If he can handle any situation that comes his way, then he can obtain his life’s dreams, which may include that woman who is just for him and the family they want.  When a man is confident, his image clearly demonstrates that.  His actions demonstrate that.  In any Lifestyle choice, the man must be confident of himself.  He's allowed to not know answers, that's just part of learning.  But a successful male or female dominant exudes confidence, not ego.

A healthy Ego – Ego driven by desire helps get the ball moving in life.  I desire something so strongly that I’ll do anything to get it.  Ergo, so will our dominants.

Desire or Passion – Not just passion for the Lifestyle or regular bullshit, if we don’t desire anything, what is there for us?

Purpose – A man with a purpose is aware of himself and why he’s here.  He doesn’t spend time questioning himself.  He knows where he's going and who should accompany him on the journey as the submissive gives him a special gift that will empower them both.

Support – From loved ones.  From anyone who constructively helps and motivates us.

A sense of right and wrong – Notice I did not say morals.  Morals are subjective to different whims. One of my Dominants wants me and another male. By “moral” standards, that’s wrong.  I don’t get how but some folks don’t see it that way.  However, we both have a sense of right and wrong.  No child harmed, always try to do best for everyone involved, etc.  A man with a sense of right and wrong trusts his gut.  More often than not, he’s powerful in his own right.

Lastly, successful Dominants aren’t afraid of Failure. They understand that it’s an event that triggers a learning experience and a chance to grow.

In my upcoming release Menage Bound, Jason and Chase are two strong, successful men who seek reaffirmation that the oddity of the relationship they share with a woman is acceptable.  Siddella seeks two strong men who know what to do in and out of the bedroom.  With her grueling corporate job, she's lacked support in the areas of her life that count.  When presented with Madame Eve's 1Night Stand service, she jumps at the chance to find a fulfilling fantasy that may last only for a night.

But will Chase and Jason see the full potential in Siddella?

Is BDSM more acceptable than it used to be?

by Casea Major

Are some aspects of BDSM( Bondage/discipline, Dominance/submission, Sadomasochism) becoming more socially acceptable?

To me it seems so.

In recent days, a certain book containing BDSM elements has been in the eye of mainstream media and risen to the top of bestseller lists. There is much division regarding the depiction of the BDSM lifestyle within the story but those issues aside, this rise in popularity has me thinking – is mainstream ready for bondage and discipline?

Last year Rhianna's hit S & M rose to the number one spot on Billboard's Pop Chart and stirred some controversy in its wake. Still banned in 11 countries and the title changed for the UK release, the song depicts strong BDSM elements.

It seems the idea of BDSM isn't as taboo as it used to be. But is the jaunt into mainstream just a passing fad or is it the result of a mainstream cultural softening toward the ideas of Dominance and submission and the acknowledgement that there can be correlation between pleasure and pain?
In my new 1Night Stand story, Night with a Dom, my heroine Melody Manning explores the possibility of pleasure in submission.

Night with a Dom
Blurb:
Melody Manning’s workaholic ambition, coupled with a slave-driving former boss, has made her the youngest market analyst in her firm. It’s also killed her personal life, including losing her fiancĂ©. When she receives a message from him on New Year’s Eve announcing his engagement to another woman, Mel loses it. Her new, more compassionate boss has the perfect solution for her—get laid. Good and laid.
At his suggestion, she signs up with the 1Night Stand service, listing her deepest sexual desires on the application.  A speedy response from Madame Eve has Melody on her way to Sonoma Valley wine country and a one-night stand with a mysterious Dom.

The sexy, masked Master promises to get to the bottom of her guilt and provide ultimate satisfaction under the safety of his stern hand. After an emotional night of submission and uninhibited passion, will her lover’s unmasking lead to the end of their encounter or give Mel another chance at love?

I want to hear your thoughts whether you're in the lifestyle or don't even know what BDSM stands for. Leave me a comment and weigh in.

The Impetus of a 1 Night Stand by Becca Dale

When Valerie and Kate asked me if I would be interested in writing a story for the 1NS series, I cringed a little bit. Why? Well, because honestly, casual sex is not my style. Then I started thinking about it and realized that there would be an element of freedom in turning things over to someone objective like Madame Evangeline. In addition, I started to wonder how I could work my own need for connection into a single night. The urgency of such a moment intrigued me, as well. What kind of pressure would my heroine have to be under in order to seek solace at the hands of a stranger? What kind of setting would enable a woman to leave her inhibitions behind and embrace such a scary situation? Once the idea had been planted in my head, it would not shut up. I had to find a way to explore a one-night stand.

My husband and I often travel out of the country with friends or to the motorcycle rally in Sturgis. Though the latter is in my home state, both environments are so foreign compared to my usual world that I find I am more carefree, less worried about who will see me dance on a table or sing karaoke—badly—if I indulge in a drink or two. I usually start a story with a hero, but this one demanded I begin with a setting that would allow the heroine to fly without a net. Jumping on the web, I search many beautiful places, but when a picture of Greece popped up, I knew everything. The hero, the reason behind Brenna’s need to flee, the ultimate outcome, all came clear in an instant. From there Erotic Healing burned through my keyboard. I cannot remember ever having written something so fast that I truly adore.

Despite the fact that Brenna is stunning and a bit spoiled, I had no trouble feeling for her. Her struggle broke my heart from the moment I understood it. Thus, the thought process behind her sweet hero. Kostas represents the only guy I have ever written who is not American through and through. He is not the rough and ready cowboy or the arrogant American businessman. He is a cocky shit, but his drive stems from his desire to be kind. His gentleness blew me out of the water. Though my heroes are usually overly protective of their women, they are, by nature, not always nice. Kostas offers a weird twist. He uses Brenna’s pain, even feeds it, in his effort to be considerate, and I found myself fascinated by him.

[GRIN] You may call off the men in white jackets. I have not lost my mind to the point that I am unaware Kostas sprang from my head, but anyone who has ever written anything will understand when I say that he is not my creation. I am merely the pathway through which he found life. The one constant I try to hold in my writing is the idea that a true hero is whatever the heroine needs. Kostas meets and exceeds that requirement, and though he is not anything like I expected him to be, Madame Evangeline guaranteed he would be exactly the type of man necessary to free Brenna for at least one night.
