Why Choose a One-Night Stand?

by Heather Long

When I wrote my first one-night stand last November, I asked myself the question of why would this couple need Madame Eve? Why would any couple actually need a Madame Eve to hook them up?

Not every one-night stand ends as a happily ever after, in fact—in life as in fiction—the one night stand is usually just that. One night of carnal freedom to either be someone else or be yourself with no expectations of tomorrow. In many ways, this is a very liberating event. You can spend the night with a perfect someone whose only interest is mutual pleasure, pack up in the morning and walk away—no fuss, no muss.

Guys do it all the time, but could a woman really do that? These are the questions I ask myself each time I sit down to write a new adventure for Madame Eve’s clients, particularly in my Always a Marine series.

  • Rebecca, Once Her Man, Always Her Man - Rebecca agreed to the set up by her business partner because sheÕd lost all interest in romantic relationships never having found anyone that could take LukeÕs place in her heart. She didnÕt really expect anything to happen, least of all the love of her life to walk in.
  • Jazz, Retreat Hell! She Just Got Here - Jazz is a Marine. She serves her country, works hard and is one of the toughest guys in her field. She wants a one night stand, because she just wants to fulfill a fantasy, be feminine for a night, and celebrate being alive before she heads out into the field.
  • Lauren, Tell It to the Marine - Lauren was an actress, disillusioned with Hollywood and the empty relationships. She had her agent sign her up, and took advantage of the chance to meet a real man. She wanted just a good time, a real moment in time that belonged to her.
  • Helena, Proud to Serve Her - Helena was one of those geniuses, who   finished high school and college early and then launched into a power career. But she was so busy building her life, she forgot to live it and when she found herself spending her twenty-ninth birthday alone, enough was enough. She wanted a one night stand to reconnect with the life she could have had.
  • Shannon, Her Marine - Shannon actually broke a lot of rules for me, I am not fond of rape as a trope in a story for obvious reasons, but in ShannonÕs case - she literally doesnÕt remember the event. She knows it happened, but she was out and the guy was never caught. So itÕs not fear she lives with, but a sense of shame and loss of control. For her, the one night stand is about taking back her passion, facing her fear head on and freeing herself.
Each of these women have a very different journey they take, but they are all clients of Madame Eve and each experiences a happily for now - if not a happily ever after and for some, that happily for now is all they need.

What reasons would you like to see for a woman exploring in a one-night stand? I'll pick a random comment (leave your email address!) and give away one of my books of your choice!

  1. I'd like to see a woman that would have a one night stand simply because she wanted to have sex with that partner. Women have the same sexual needs that men do and it's ridiculous that society judges us differently. If a man sleeps with ten women, he's a stud and if a woman does it, she's a slut, or there's something wrong with her. Or she has to have some kind of deeper issue or addiction. While it's great for storytelling, sometimes women just have sex because they like it and I'd like to see that represented in fiction.

    1. I'm with Saranna. Even toys get old after a while. Sometimes a girl just needs a good shag!

  2. Her husband has grown distant, and she is feeling left out of his life/heart, so she goes and finds a temporary heart to rest in.

  3. I think there's a freedom in a one night stand. It can be something purely for you...to enjoy yourself with a freedom rarely allowed when you know you won't have to deal with the other person again. You have the freedom to be completely yourself....or to be someone else completely. You don't have to deal with the insecurities and "what if's" that normally follow you into your daily relationships. No worrying about what if he doesn't like what I do to him sexually or what if, after sex, he doesn't like who I am deep down. Or worse, what if I don't like him?
With a one night stand, your focus isn't outward on someone else. The focus is purely inward and selfish...focused on your needs...and yours alone. If he enjoys himself in the meantime, great! If not, it's no big deal...it was just a one night stand.

  4. I like the premise of second chances at love. Maybe the H/h fall in love in their teens and because of a misunderstanding or family problems, they have to part. Years later, they are re-united with a 1NS. I knew that story has been told before, but I always love it! Thanks!

  6. Women should explore their sexual dreams without fear of embarrassment as a 1NS shouldn't ever be seeing man again...

  8. I think a woman would be able to explore a 1NS when she has lusted after the one she doesn't feel she can get. Maybe that bodybuilder at the gym, the dog groomer, or even the fireman who lives in the apartment upstairs.

  9. This might be far-fetched but maybe the woman is disabled or disfigured. Maybe she was attacked by a bear and has claw marks running down her face or maybe she had a tumor removed from her knee and she walks with a limp. She's self-conscious and believes she's unattractive so she wants the 1NS. Then of course she is set up with the most sweetest guy in the world and he falls in love with her and wants to hold her and protect her (everybody say 'awwwwww') lol.

  10. how about out of sheer loneliness and the fact that you can't just pop down to the local bar like you use to and still be safe. now it can get you killed or raped or worse you could end up with some life altering disease.

at least thru this kind of service you would know the people had all been to the doctor and had a clean bill of health and you should be well match for personality.

  13. How about a widow who loved her husband with everything she had and just can't get over his death. She thinks she would rather be alone than try again with someone else.
Your 1NS series sounds fantastic. Can't wait to read it.
