Things That Inspire the Muse

By Lia Davis
My muse is the very active creative side of my brain. I don’t have a name or image for my muse. I just call her “my muse”. LOL. She can find a storyline at the strangest times and with just about anything she sees, hears and even in a thought.

Stories come to me as a “What if…?” and can be sparked by just about anything such as a picture, music, TV, reading, people watching, a trip to the mall and sitting in traffic during my commute to and from work. I’ve even had ideas come to me during conversations with friends. Sometimes it’s an expression they use or a certain word or phrase that gets my muse’s attention. I’m sure there are many other different ways writers find inspiration that brings the initial storyline to mind.

My inspiration for my 1Night Stand, Ravished Before Sunrise, was reading other stories in the series and my love for vampires and the paranormal. They are awesome and fun reads. So I wanted to write one and sat down a plotted the characters and storyline.

I’ve also had a weird dream that inspired a story. I started writing it as soon as I got up so I didn’t forget, but I’m not sure what to do with it yet. It was during my first year of writing and needs a LOT of help.

Have you ever had an idea, whether it was related to writing or some other project you were working on, that seem to come from an unlikely source? Please share your inspirations.

  3. Great blog and excerpt. I find it interesting that you a a accounting major and writing romance. Usually these are two different halves of the brain. Do you find yourself attracted to one side more than the other? Or do you have an equal passion for numbers and romantic writing?

  8. Inspiration does come from many places. I'm an avid knitter and crocheter and I like to challenge myself when designing. Sometimes designs are born from necessity. I need to bring my exercise ball with me to my boot camp class. So, I designed a crocheted bag to carry it in.

Pictures are a usual place for me to find inspiration. One time I found this beautiful picture of a field of flowers. I purchased yarn similar to the colors in the photo and spent the day trying to figure out how to translate the picture to my crocheting/knitting. Sometimes you just have to let the brain rest. It wasn't until I was feeding my newborn son that night at 3:00am that I figured out how to do what I wanted. Got done feeding him and graphed the design before I went back to bed. The completed project turned out to be a full length coat.

The book blub sounds great! I'm definitely putting it on my wish list.

  9. I have just started reading paranormal books lately, and really enjoy them. I am surprised at this, as, I did not like Alice in wonderland or any other quirky books as a young girl.
